Gifts for Babies: 10 Picks, Sorted by the Stage They Fit

For a baby from newborn to about eighteen months, bought by someone who wants the toy to fit the baby they will be on the day, not the one in last month's photos.

    Three quick picks

Different answers for different situations. The full list and the reasons are below.

If the baby is not six months old yet

    Fisher-Price 4-in-1 Cuddle & Crawl Duck

The only pick here the maker lists from birth, and it changes with them from tummy time to crawling. The other two quick picks start at six months and at one year.

Work out how old they will be on the day

A baby changes more in three months than most people change in three years. A toy made for a crawler is wasted on a newborn, and a newborn toy is outgrown before it is unwrapped by a baby who is already pulling up on the furniture. So this guide is sorted by stage, using the age range each maker puts on the box, from birth through the first steps to a first birthday.

Count forward to the day it will be opened. A baby who is four months old in October is six months old at Christmas, and that is exactly the age where half of these toys begin. If you are between two stages, buy for the later one: a toy they grow into gets used, a toy they have outgrown goes straight to the donation bag.

Two more things decide whether a baby gift is welcome in the house. The first is noise: most of these toys sing, and parents hear every song a few hundred times. The second is space: a walker or a ride-on takes up a corner of a living room. Two picks below need no batteries at all, and they are marked.

We do not show prices on this page. Amazon prices move daily, so every button goes to the live product page on Amazon.ca.

    • How old will they be on the day the gift is opened?
    • Is the age on the box at or just above that age?
    • Will the parents welcome another toy that sings?
    • Is there floor space for a walker or a ride-on?
    • Have they already been given a big activity toy? Families with a new baby are often given two.

    All 10 picks

    Fisher-Price 4-in-1 Cuddle & Crawl Duck
    1

    Fisher-Price 4-in-1 Cuddle & Crawl Duck

Best for: A newborn, or a baby not yet sitting up

    by Fisher-Price

The only pick listed from birth

    • Recommended from birth
    • Four play modes: tummy time, sitting, beginner crawl and chase
    • Waddles and flaps its wings, with a different tune for each mode
    • Soft plush outside, battery powered

    Why it fits

A baby's first months are spent lying down, and most baby toys are made for a baby who can sit. This one starts as something soft to look at during tummy time and becomes something to chase once they crawl.

    Skip this if

The baby is already crawling well. They will reach the last of its four modes quickly, and one of the six-month picks will last longer.

    Ravensburger Play+ Colour & Shape Sorter – Chameleon 3-in-1 Shape Sorting & Pull-Along Toy

    by Ravensburger

The smallest pick, sized for a diaper bag

    • Ages 6 months and up
    • Three toys in one: teether, shape sorter and pull-along
    • Food-grade silicone, wiped clean with a damp cloth
    • Compact enough for a diaper bag or a stroller

    Why it fits

Teething is the problem of the moment for most babies around six months, and this answers it while still being a toy. It is also the one gift on this page that leaves the house with them.

    Skip this if

You want a gift with presence under the tree. It is small, and next to the activity toys it can look like a stocking stuffer.

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Sit & Steer Driver Car
    3

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Sit & Steer Driver Car

Best for: A baby who has just learned to sit up

    by Fisher-Price

The most talk and song of any pick, with 150 plus songs, sounds and phrases

    • Recommended from 6 months to 3 years
    • Three Smart Stages levels that change the content as the child grows
    • Play stations all the way round: steering wheel, keypad, gear shifter and a shape-sorter trunk
    • Battery operated

    Why it fits

A seated baby can only play with what is in front of them, and this puts something within reach on every side, so they can turn to it rather than having toys handed to them.

    Skip this if

They already have a big activity centre. This and the jungle tree below do the same job in different ways, so choose one.

Fisher-Price Sit-to-Stand Jungle Tree Musical Activity Toy
    4

Fisher-Price Sit-to-Stand Jungle Tree Musical Activity Toy

Best for: A sitter who is about to start pulling up to stand

    by Fisher-Price

Balls to drop and chase, rather than buttons to press

    • Recommended from 6 months
    • Designed to be played with sitting and then standing
    • Includes 6 balls, with 3 drop-through music stations and 4 exits
    • Roller, spinner, flipper, ball launcher and monkey swing

    Why it fits

Dropping a ball and watching it come out somewhere else is one of the first games babies invent for themselves. This builds a toy around it, and it grows with them as they start to stand.

    Skip this if

You picked the driver car above, or the house has an older sibling. Six small balls get carried off around a home quickly.

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn 4-in-1 Snack Cart Walker, Multilanguage
    5

    by Fisher-Price

    Four languages, including French

    • Ages 6 months to 3 years
    • Four ways to play: sit, scoot, walk and pretend
    • 135 plus songs, sounds and phrases in English, Spanish, French and Brazilian Portuguese
    • Three Smart Stages learning levels

    Why it fits

A push walker is the toy that gets used in the months between standing and walking, and this one starts as a sit-at toy first, so it is not waiting in a corner until they are ready. French is one of its four languages, which matters to a lot of Canadian families.

    Skip this if

The home is small or has stairs near the play area. A walker needs open floor to be any use, and it is a large toy to store.

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn 4-in-1 Tractor Ride-On with Pull Wagon (Multilanguage)
    6

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn 4-in-1 Tractor Ride-On with Pull Wagon (Multilanguage)

Best for: A walker who is ready to sit on something and push

    by Fisher-Price

The only ride-on, and it plays in English or French

    • Ages 9 months to 3 years
    • Four ways to play: ride-on, sit-at, pull-along and pretend market
    • English or French, selectable, across 75 plus songs, sounds and phrases
    • Includes a pull wagon

    Why it fits

After the first steps, babies want to ride and pull things, and this gives them both. It suits a nine to eighteen month old better than the walker above, which starts younger.

    Skip this if

You bought the walker. Two big multi-stage Fisher-Price toys for one baby is one too many, for the baby and for the living room.

Wooden Shape Sorter and Rainbow Stacker
    7

Wooden Shape Sorter and Rainbow Stacker

Best for: Parents who would rather the toy did not talk

    by Amazon Basics

Wood, no batteries and no sound

    • Recommended from 12 months
    • Two toys in one: a shape sorter box and a stacker post
    • FSC-certified wood and plastic pieces
    • Wiped clean with a damp cloth

    Why it fits

Shape sorting and stacking are two of the classic first-year skills, and this does both without a single song. In a house already full of toys that play music, a quiet one is the gift the parents will thank you for.

    Skip this if

The baby is under a year. The maker lists it from twelve months, and it suits a first birthday better than a first Christmas for a younger baby.

Mega Bloks First Builders Build 'n Learn Table
    8

Mega Bloks First Builders Build 'n Learn Table

Best for: A one year old who likes to put things on top of things

    by Mega Bloks

The only pick that folds flat to put away

    • Ages 1 year and up
    • More than 20 chunky blocks and 2 rolling wheelbases
    • A tabletop with a rolling track
    • Folds flat for storage, and needs no batteries

    Why it fits

Blocks are the first building toy, and the table keeps them in one place, which is half the battle with a toddler. It folds away, which matters in a smaller home.

    Skip this if

There is already a set of big blocks in the house. The table is the extra, and on its own it does not justify a second block set.

Ms. Rachel Sing & Learn Tractor, Interactive Toy with Sounds & Figure
    9

Ms. Rachel Sing & Learn Tractor, Interactive Toy with Sounds & Figure

Best for: A first birthday in a house that watches Ms. Rachel

    by Ms. Rachel

The only pick with a character they may already know

    • Ages 1 to 3 years
    • Includes the tractor, a removable trailer, a reversible corn piece and a Ms. Rachel figure
    • Asks questions and shares facts when the figure sits in the driver's seat
    • Works with other Ms. Rachel figures and the Learning Farm playset, sold separately

    Why it fits

A character a toddler already loves turns a toy into a favourite, and Ms. Rachel is a fixture in a lot of homes with young children. For a family that watches her, this lands better than any of the others.

    Skip this if

The family does not watch the show. Without the character it is an ordinary toy tractor, and the ride-on above does more.

Binibi Feliz Navidad - Christmas Songs in Spanish - Musical Book for Babies & Toddlers
    10

Binibi Feliz Navidad - Christmas Songs in Spanish - Musical Book for Babies & Toddlers

Best for: A first Christmas in a family that sings in Spanish, or wants to

    by Binibi

The only book, and the only gift tied to the season

    • Designed for ages 1 to 3
    • Five Christmas carols sung in Spanish, about 20 to 30 seconds each
    • English and Spanish lyrics on every page
    • Board book with an on/off switch; 3 replaceable AG10 batteries included

    Why it fits

A first Christmas is a moment families like to mark, and a book is the gift most likely to be kept. The tunes are carols most families know, so a parent can sing along in either language.

    Skip this if

Nobody in the family speaks or wants to learn Spanish. The songs are sung in Spanish, so for an English or French home it is a novelty rather than a book they will reach for.
