First Tech for Kids and Teens: 8 Gadgets Sorted by the Age They Are Ready For

For a parent, grandparent or relative choosing a child's first speaker, camera, tablet or headset, who wants to know what age the maker means it for, and what has to be set up before it works.

    Three quick picks

Different answers for different situations. The full list and the reasons are below.

    For a preschooler's first device

Echo Dot Kids with Alexa (Stardust)

Ages 3 and up on the listing, no screen, and a parent sets the time limits. A year of Amazon Kids+ is included and renews monthly after that unless it is cancelled.

For a kid who wants a camera with no account or app

FUJIFILM Instax Mini 13 Instant Camera - Candy Pink

Point, shoot and the print comes out. It runs on two AA batteries, which are in the box, and needs nothing set up. The film is bought separately.

Meta says no Quest under 10, and from 10 to 12 a parent has to create and manage the child's Meta account. From 13 they can use their own.

Sorted by the age they are ready for it

A first gadget goes wrong in two ways: it is too young for the child and goes in a drawer, or it is too old and needs an account, a phone or a subscription nobody planned for. So this page is sorted by when a child is ready for each one, using what the maker says.

Three groups. The box gives an age: the maker states a youngest age, and we give it. No age on the box: the maker states none and there is nothing to set up, no app, no account and no phone, so where these sit is our reading. An account or a phone decides it: the maker's own rules set the age, such as who has to create the account, or the device does nothing without a smartphone.

Every age and every account rule here is the maker's, from its own page. Where the Amazon.ca listing says something different, we say so. We also say when something renews as a subscription, needs Wi-Fi to start, or needs film or batteries that are not in the box.

We do not show prices on this page. Amazon prices move daily, so every button goes to the live product page on Amazon.ca.

    • How old is the child, and do they have their own phone or tablet yet?
    • Who will set it up, and on whose account?
    • Does it renew as a subscription after the first year or trial?
    • Does it need Wi-Fi to start, or film and batteries that are not in the box?

    All 8 picks

Echo Dot Kids with Alexa (Stardust)
    1

Echo Dot Kids with Alexa (Stardust)

Best for: A three or four year old who asks for songs and stories all day

    by Amazon

The youngest age on this page, and no screen at all

    • Ages 3 and up on the listing; small parts, not for children under 3
    • Includes 1 year of Amazon Kids+, designed for kids aged 3 to 12, which renews monthly after the year unless cancelled in the Amazon Parent Dashboard
    • Parental controls: kid-friendly answers, explicit songs filtered, daily time limits and an activity review
    • Needs Wi-Fi and the Alexa app; a mic off button on the speaker

    Why it fits

A child too young to read can ask it for a song, a story or an alarm, and there is no screen to stare at. The limits are set by a parent in the Parent Dashboard, so it can sit in a bedroom without being a free-for-all.

    Skip this if

Nobody wants another subscription. The included year of Amazon Kids+ renews monthly unless someone cancels it, so put a reminder in the calendar.

Toniebox 2 Starter Set with Pikachu - Lightning Yellow
    2

Toniebox 2 Starter Set with Pikachu - Lightning Yellow

Best for: A five year old Pokémon fan who wants to press play on their own

    by Tonies

A player run by placing a figure on top, with no screen or menus

    • Age 5 and up for this set, per tonies; the box itself is certified for 1 and up, and the Amazon.ca title says 1 and up
    • In the box: a Toniebox 2, a Pikachu Tonie with 1 hour 18 minutes of stories, and a USB-C cable
    • Kids tap, tilt and pinch it to control play; parents manage it in the tonies app
    • Wi-Fi is needed for first setup and the first play of each new Tonie, then it plays offline

    Why it fits

Putting the figure on the box starts the story, so a child who cannot read or work a menu can choose what to hear without asking. More Tonies can be added over the years, and tonies says the box is made for ages 5 to 12 and up.

    Skip this if

There is no Wi-Fi where it will first be used, or the child is not into Pokémon. Every new Tonie needs Wi-Fi the first time, and the included figure is all Pikachu.

Bitzee Aquarium Interactive Fish Tank Toy & Digital Pet, Ages 5+
    3

Bitzee Aquarium Interactive Fish Tank Toy & Digital Pet, Ages 5+

Best for: A five or six year old who wants a pet to look after

    by Bitzee

A digital pet tank with 30 creatures to hatch, and the batteries are in the box

    • Ages 5 and up, on the title and the listing's spec table
    • 30 characters to hatch, collect and grow, including a shark and a mermaid
    • Responds to touch and a dial; 2 games to start and 6 more to unlock; lights that can be changed
    • Includes 5 food pellets and 3 AA batteries

    Why it fits

Feeding and caring for the pets so they grow is a gentle first taste of a gadget that needs looking after, and nothing has to be set up, downloaded or signed into. Its lights can be changed, so the listing suggests it as bedroom or desk decor too.

    Skip this if

They already have a Tamagotchi or another digital pet. It is the same idea in a fish tank, and the novelty is the care routine.

FUJIFILM Instax Mini 13 Instant Camera - Candy Pink
    4

FUJIFILM Instax Mini 13 Instant Camera - Candy Pink

Best for: A kid who wants their own camera and a print they can hold

    by FUJIFILM

The simplest camera here: automatic exposure, AA batteries, and nothing to set up

    • Fujifilm gives no age
    • Automatic exposure, close-up mode, a selfie mirror and a 2 or 10 second self-timer
    • Runs on 2 AA batteries, included, for about 100 shots per set
    • Prints on instax mini film, sold separately; a print develops in about 90 seconds

    Why it fits

There are no settings to get wrong: it sets the exposure itself, so a child can point, shoot and hand a print to a friend a couple of minutes later. No app, no account and no phone, so it can be used the day it is opened.

    Skip this if

Film will be a problem. Every shot uses a print, the film is not in the box, and a child who shoots everything will go through a pack in an afternoon.

Polaroid Go Generation 3 Mini Instant Camera — Light Blue
    5

Polaroid Go Generation 3 Mini Instant Camera — Light Blue

Best for: A kid who wants the smallest camera that goes everywhere

    by Polaroid

A rechargeable camera with a double exposure mode, and no batteries to buy

    • Polaroid gives no age
    • Built-in rechargeable battery, up to 15 film packs per charge
    • Selfie mirror, flash, self-timer and double exposure
    • Works only with Polaroid Go film; the listing is for the camera only, with no film in the box

    Why it fits

Small enough to wear on the wrist strap, and the double exposure mode gives a kid something to play with beyond pointing and shooting. It recharges, so there are no AA batteries to keep buying.

    Skip this if

They already have film for another instant camera. It takes Polaroid Go film only, not i-Type, 600 or instax film.

    Apple iPad 11-inch (A16 chip) — 128GB Pink
    6

    Apple iPad 11-inch (A16 chip) — 128GB Pink

Best for: A child's first tablet, on an account a parent controls

    by Apple

The only pick here that does everything, which is why a parent has to set it up

    • Apple gives no age for the iPad; Apple says parents or guardians have to create the Apple Account for a child under 13
    • 11-inch Liquid Retina display, A16 chip, 128GB, Wi-Fi model
    • Up to 10 hours of web or video on Wi-Fi; Touch ID in the top button
    • In the box: a USB-C cable and a 20W power adapter; works with Apple Pencil (USB-C), sold separately

    Why it fits

A tablet is the first device most kids ask for, and Apple's rule makes the age question simple: under 13, a parent creates the child's Apple Account through Family Sharing, so the parent sets the limits from the start.

    Skip this if

Nobody is ready to manage another account. Under 13 a parent has to create it, and a tablet with no limits set is a different gift from one with limits.

Meta Quest 3 512GB VR Headset, Gorilla Tag Cardboard Monkenaut Bundle
    8

Meta Quest 3 512GB VR Headset, Gorilla Tag Cardboard Monkenaut Bundle

Best for: A 10 to 13 year old ready for VR, with a parent who will manage the account

    by Meta

The highest age on this page, set by Meta's own account rules

    • Meta says children under 10 cannot use Quest 3; from 10 to 12 a parent or guardian must create and manage the child's Meta account; 13 and up use their own
    • The Amazon.ca spec table lists the age range as adult, which disagrees with Meta
    • 512GB, no wires, with full-colour passthrough to see the room
    • Two Touch Plus controllers in the box; about 2.2 hours of battery on average, per Meta

    Why it fits

It is the one pick here with a firm age line from the maker: none under 10, a parent-managed account from 10 to 12, their own from 13. Full-colour passthrough shows the room through the headset, so games can mix with the real space around them, as the listing describes.

    Skip this if

The child is under 10, or nobody wants to run a parent-managed account. Meta does not allow a Quest under 10, and from 10 to 12 the account is the parent's to set up and manage.
