    Three quick picks

Different answers for different situations. The full list and the reasons are below.

3,179 pieces that end as a Monet for the wall, with a hanging mechanism built in. The other two quick picks need a fan; this one only needs a wall.

TAMASHII NATIONS Son Goku S.H.Figuarts Action Figure

A posable Goku with three faces and five pairs of hands, for re-posing, not just standing. It is the one to pick up and play with.

For a reader who wants to play, not just look

Endless Games Fourth Wing: Rise of the Wingleader Board Game

Will it sit on a shelf, or come out to play?

A kidult is a grown-up, or a teen who feels like one, who still loves toys. The question that splits their gifts is not age or price. It is what happens after the box is open: does the thing go on a shelf and stay there, or does it come out again and again?

So this guide is sorted that way. Four picks are made to display: you build them once and they become decor. Two are posable figures, made to be shown off but also picked up, re-posed and photographed. Two are made to play: a board game and a marker set that get used up and brought back out.

Most collector gifts lean to display, and this page does too. If the person you are buying for has no shelf space left, start with the play picks.

We do not show prices on this page. Amazon prices move daily, so every button goes to the live product page on Amazon.ca.

    • Do they have a shelf, a desk or a wall with room on it? Most of these need one.
    • Do they like a long build, or would they rather open it and use it?
    • Which series are they into? Four picks make the most sense to a fan.
    • Two picks are listed for 18 and up. The rest are listed for teens as well as adults.

LEGO Art Claude Monet — Bridge Over a Pond of Water Lilies
    1

LEGO Art Claude Monet — Bridge Over a Pond of Water Lilies

Best for: An adult who would rather hang art than shelve a toy

    by LEGO

The only pick that goes on the wall

    • 3,179 pieces, for adult builders 18 and up
    • Finished size about 51 by 41 by 4 cm
    • Built-in hanging mechanism for wall display
    • A QR code in the booklet links to a podcast about Monet

    Why it fits

It is the biggest build on this page and ends as a picture, not a model, so it suits someone whose shelves are full or who wants decor that does not look like a toy.

    Skip this if

They want something to pick up and play with. Once it is on the wall it stays there, and it needs a clear stretch of wall about half a metre square.

    LEGO Botanicals Woodland Mushrooms 11505
    2

    LEGO Botanicals Woodland Mushrooms 11505

Best for: A nature lover who likes a desk or shelf piece

    by LEGO

A mushroom scene that reads as decor, not as LEGO

    • 806 pieces, for ages 18 and up
    • Fly agarics, a chanterelle, oyster mushrooms, an earthstar and two purple autumn crocuses
    • About 19 cm high, 25 cm wide and 22 cm deep

    Why it fits

It is a quieter build than the Monet and a smaller footprint, and it suits someone who likes plants and woodland things more than characters or cars.

    Skip this if

They already have a shelf of LEGO Botanicals and want something new. It is one more of the same kind of display, and it needs table or shelf depth, not a wall.

LEGO McLaren Lando Norris F1 Helmet
    3

LEGO McLaren Lando Norris F1 Helmet

Best for: A Formula 1 fan, teen or adult

    by LEGO

The fan pick for motorsport, with a plaque bearing his signature

    • 793 pieces, recommended for 14 and up
    • McLaren papaya with Lando Norris's yellow-and-black helmet design
    • Includes a Lando Norris minifigure and a display plaque with his signature and LN logo
    • About 18 cm high on its base

    Why it fits

Listed from 14, it is the display build here that suits a teen as well as an adult, and a helmet on a stand with a plaque is exactly the kind of thing a fan puts on their desk.

    Skip this if

They do not follow F1, or they cheer for a different driver. The whole point of it is Lando Norris and McLaren.

Mattel Brick Shop Hot Wheels Lamborghini Miura P400 SV Building Kit
    4

Mattel Brick Shop Hot Wheels Lamborghini Miura P400 SV Building Kit

Best for: A classic car fan who likes details

    by Mattel Brick Shop

A brick-built car with metal parts and a tiny metal twin

    • A 1:12 scale buildable Lamborghini Miura P400 SV in smooth resin bricks
    • Opening doors and hood and pop-up headlights
    • Metal exhaust and steering wheel, two sets of metal wheel covers and a decal sheet
    • Comes with a matching 1:64 metal car and a metal signature plate

    Why it fits

It is the car build here that is not LEGO, which matters to a collector who already has the LEGO cars, and the metal parts and small matching car make it feel like a collector's piece.

    Skip this if

They only collect LEGO. It is Mattel's Brick Shop line, and the listing says only that it suits teens and adult builders, with no age on it.

TAMASHII NATIONS Son Goku S.H.Figuarts Action Figure
    5

TAMASHII NATIONS Son Goku S.H.Figuarts Action Figure

Best for: A Dragon Ball Z fan who poses and photographs figures

    by S.H.Figuarts (Tamashii Nations)

Swappable faces and hands, made to be re-posed

    • Son Goku in his Cell Saga outfit, about 14 to 15 cm tall
    • Three facial expressions, five pairs of optional hands and an alternate head
    • Dynamic-Movable Shoulder System for battle poses
    • Officially licensed, listed for ages 15 and up

    Why it fits

A figure like this gets picked up again and again to try a new pose or a new face, so it sits between display and play, and it suits a collector who already has a shelf of figures.

    Skip this if

They do not watch Dragon Ball. It is one character from one saga, and without the fandom it is just a small figure.

Bandai Hobby Wing Gundam Entry Grade 1/144 Model Kit
    6

Bandai Hobby Wing Gundam Entry Grade 1/144 Model Kit

Best for: Someone curious about model kits, or a Gundam fan

    by Bandai Hobby

A first model kit: snap together, no glue, then pose it

    • Entry Grade, 1/144 scale
    • Snap-fit touch-gate parts, no glue or nippers needed
    • Colour-separated molded parts, with minimal stickers
    • Buster rifle, shield and beam saber included; recommended for 8 and up

    Why it fits

Entry Grade is built for a first kit, so it is a low-risk way into a hobby a lot of collectors end up loving, and the finished figure is posable rather than a fixed statue.

    Skip this if

They already build Gundam kits. An Entry Grade will feel simple to someone who has done a few, and it is small at 1/144 scale.

Endless Games Fourth Wing: Rise of the Wingleader Board Game
    7

Endless Games Fourth Wing: Rise of the Wingleader Board Game

Best for: A Fourth Wing reader with a game night

    by Endless Games

The play pick for a group, built from the books

    • 2 to 5 players, with a solo mode
    • About 30 to 60 minutes a game, ages 14 and up
    • Custom dragon movers and a metal bookmark first-player marker
    • 24 event cards and 50 ally cards

    Why it fits

Fans of the books collect things from that world, and this one gets played rather than shelved, so it suits a reader who wants to share the series with friends.

    Skip this if

They have not read Fourth Wing. The characters and moments are the draw, and a non-reader gets a strategy game full of references that mean nothing to them.

Crayola Dual-Tip Alcohol Marker Set for Adults, 60ct, Fine & Brush Tips
    8

Crayola Dual-Tip Alcohol Marker Set for Adults, 60ct, Fine & Brush Tips

Best for: A teen or adult who colours, sketches or draws fan art

    by Crayola

The only pick that gets used up, not kept

    • 60 dual-tip markers, a fine tip and a flexible brush tip on each
    • Alcohol-based ink for smooth blending
    • 3 swatch cards for testing and organising colours
    • Recommended for ages 14 and up

    Why it fits

Plenty of collectors draw the characters they love, and a proper blending set is a step up from kids' markers, so this suits someone who makes things rather than buys them.

    Skip this if

They want something to keep. These are made to be used, and an artist who already owns a pro alcohol marker set may not want a second brand to match.
