LEGO Gifts, by Age: 12 Sets Sorted by the Age on the Box

For anyone buying LEGO for someone else, from a toddler's first bricks to an adult fan's display shelf, who wants the set to match the builder.

    Three quick picks

Different answers for different situations. The full list and the reasons are below.

For a first set, from 18 months

LEGO DUPLO Classic Colorful Creative Box

80 large DUPLO bricks with an ideas booklet and numbered bricks, listed from 18 months. The youngest set on this page; the other two quick picks are for builders who read instructions.

For an 8 year old who wants to play with it after

LEGO City Lava Land Roller Coaster Park

1,165 pieces, listed from 8, and it ends as a working coaster with 8 minifigures. A big build that turns into a playset, not a shelf piece.

    For an adult Pokémon fan

    LEGO Pokémon Eevee

587 pieces, listed for 18 and up, and a posable Eevee for the desk. The smallest adult set here, so it suits a first adult build or a fan with little shelf space.

Start with the age on the box, then the piece count

Every LEGO box prints an age, and it is the most useful number on it. It tells you whether the bricks are DUPLO-sized for small hands, whether a child can follow the instructions alone, and whether the set was designed for an adult. So this guide runs in that order: from 18 months up to 18 and up.

None of these listings states a build time, so we do not guess one. The piece count is the honest stand-in: more pieces means a longer build, and the jump from a few hundred to over a thousand is the difference between a set and a project. Every pick lists its count exactly as the box gives it.

The age is a floor, not a ceiling. A confident seven year old can often build a set listed from 8 with some help, and plenty of teens build the 18 and up sets. Going far below the age on the box is where it goes wrong: small pieces and long instructions turn a gift into a chore for whoever is helping.

We do not show prices on this page. Amazon prices move daily, so every button goes to the live product page on Amazon.ca.

    • How old is the builder, and have they built a LEGO set on their own before?
    • Do they want to play with it after, or put it on a shelf?
    • Is there a grown-up free to help if the set is a step above their age?
    • Is there a younger sibling at home? Sets from 6 and up have small pieces.

    All 12 picks

LEGO DUPLO Classic Colorful Creative Box
    1

LEGO DUPLO Classic Colorful Creative Box

Best for: A toddler's first bricks

    by LEGO DUPLO

The youngest age on this page, and no instructions to follow

    • Recommended from 18 months, 80 DUPLO bricks
    • Inspiration booklet with simple build ideas
    • Numbered bricks for early counting
    • Eye decorations and a propeller piece; the largest suggested model is a duck about 9 cm tall

    Why it fits

DUPLO bricks are big enough for small hands, and an open box of them grows with the child: stacking first, then the booklet's animals and vehicles, then whatever they invent.

    Skip this if

The child is already four or five and building with an older sibling's bricks. It is a first set, and a kid past DUPLO will find it too easy.

LEGO DUPLO Town 3-in-1 Creative Ramps with Vehicles
    2

LEGO DUPLO Town 3-in-1 Creative Ramps with Vehicles

Best for: A preschooler who loves cars and crashes

    by LEGO

Three ramp layouts to rebuild, with two race cars

    • Recommended from 3 years, 111 bricks and elements
    • 3 ramp builds: long jump, split ramp, two short ramps
    • 2 race cars, plus flames, cones and a trophy
    • Tallest build about 48 cm high and 99 cm wide

    Why it fits

Three layouts from one box means the play changes when they rebuild it, and racing two cars side by side gives a three or four year old a reason to play with a sibling or a parent.

    Skip this if

Floor space is tight. At its widest the track is about a metre across, so it needs room to be left out.

    LEGO City Snowplow
    3

    LEGO City Snowplow

Best for: A six year old's first set with real instructions

    by LEGO

The fewest pieces of any set here with small bricks

    • Ages 6 and up, 263 pieces
    • Front plow tilts and raises, plus a salt-spreading feature
    • Driver minifigure and a 2-seat cab that tilts to reach the engine
    • About 19 cm long

    Why it fits

A first set with small bricks works best when it is short, and 263 pieces is the smallest build on this page past DUPLO. The plow and the salt spreader give it something to do once it is built.

    Skip this if

They already have a few City sets. It is a small, simple build, and a confident builder will finish it fast and want more.

    LEGO City Vintage Steam Train
    4

    LEGO City Vintage Steam Train

Best for: A train fan ready for a longer build

    by LEGO

A train with a station, and it can be motorised later

    • Ages 7 and up, 575 pieces
    • Steam engine, coal tender, passenger car, station platform, bench, track section and signal
    • 5 minifigures: conductor, engineer and 3 passengers
    • Works with LEGO Powered Up for motion; motor and remote sold separately

    Why it fits

It plays as a train set and sits on a shelf as a model, so it suits a seven year old who likes both. The Powered Up option gives a future birthday something to add.

    Skip this if

They expect it to move on its own. Out of the box it is pushed by hand; the motor and remote are a separate purchase.

LEGO Friends Candy & Cupcake Ferris Wheel
    5

LEGO Friends Candy & Cupcake Ferris Wheel

Best for: A seven year old who builds stories, not just models

    by LEGO

A fairground ride that spins, with three minidolls

    • Ages 7 and up, 602 pieces
    • Spinning Ferris wheel with Nova, Zac and Liann minidolls
    • Cotton candy stand, ring toss game and 3 plushie prize bricks
    • About 25 cm high

    Why it fits

The Friends sets are made for role play, and a ride that turns plus a game stall gives the minidolls something to do once it is built.

    Skip this if

They want vehicles or action. It is a candy-themed fairground, and a kid who wants trucks will leave it on the shelf.

LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Forest Animals Gray Wolf
    6

LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Forest Animals Gray Wolf

Best for: An animal lover who likes to rebuild

    by LEGO

Three models from one box: a wolf, a falcon or a raccoon

    • Ages 8 and up, 657 pieces
    • Builds a wolf, a falcon with a pedestal, or a raccoon
    • Movable jaw and posable details
    • Wolf about 15 cm high

    Why it fits

A 3-in-1 set gets built three times instead of once, which suits a kid who enjoys the building more than the playing. The posed animal sits well on a bedroom shelf.

    Skip this if

They want minifigures and a scene to play in. There are none here; it is an animal model to build, pose and rebuild.

LEGO City Lava Land Roller Coaster Park
    7

LEGO City Lava Land Roller Coaster Park

Best for: An eight year old who wants a big build that plays

    by LEGO

Over a thousand pieces that end as a working ride

    • Ages 8 and up, 1,165 pieces
    • Launch the 3-car train to set off a tumbling lava boulder; spinning mine cart carousel
    • 8 minifigures, including a posable rock monster
    • About 54 cm wide

    Why it fits

It is the biggest set here listed from 8, and it ends as a theme park with moving parts and a cast of minifigures, so the play starts when the build ends.

    Skip this if

They are a first-time builder. Over a thousand pieces is a lot to start on, so a smaller City set is the better first step.

LEGO Friends Heartlake City Grand Hotel
    8

LEGO Friends Heartlake City Grand Hotel

Best for: A nine year old who wants the biggest kids' set here

    by LEGO

The highest piece count below the adult sets

    • Ages 9 and up, 1,406 pieces
    • Working elevators and a rotating dance floor
    • 6 minidolls and 2 cat figures
    • Wedding and party accessories, including rings, a bouquet and a cake

    Why it fits

A multi-room hotel is a building project and then a dollhouse-style playset, with enough rooms and characters to keep a nine or ten year old's stories going.

    Skip this if

Shelf space is short or there is no patience for a long build. It is the largest kids' set here and stays out as a big playset.

LEGO Technic Ferrari 488 Pista Car
    9

LEGO Technic Ferrari 488 Pista Car

Best for: A car fan ready for how things work

    by LEGO

Technic engineering: a V8 with moving pistons and real steering

    • Ages 9 and up, 882 pieces
    • V8 engine with moving pistons, functional steering, a differential and opening doors
    • About 28 cm long
    • Unlocks a Forza Horizon 6 livery; the game is needed to redeem it

    Why it fits

Technic is a different way to build, with gears and axles instead of a scene, and watching the pistons move when the wheels turn is the reward for a kid curious about engines.

    Skip this if

They want minifigures or something to play out stories with. Technic is a model to build and admire, and it has none.

    LEGO Pokémon Eevee
    10

    LEGO Pokémon Eevee

Best for: An adult Pokémon fan with a desk to decorate

    by LEGO

The smallest 18 and up set here

    • Recommended for 18 and up, 587 pieces
    • Posable head, limbs, ears and angled tail
    • A hidden build detail for fans of Eevee's evolutions
    • Over 19 cm tall

    Why it fits

It is an adult display set at a manageable size, which makes it a good first adult build or a gift for a fan who does not have room for a big model.

    Skip this if

It is for a child. The box says 18 and up, so for a younger Pokémon fan pick a set listed for their age instead.

LEGO Super Mario Donkey Kong Arcade
    11

LEGO Super Mario Donkey Kong Arcade

Best for: A retro gamer who grew up on arcade cabinets

    by LEGO

A display model that moves: barrels roll on a loop

    • Recommended for 18 and up, 1,367 pieces
    • Working joystick, jump button and barrel-release lever
    • Circulates 21 barrels in a continuous loop
    • Jumpman, Donkey Kong and Lady figures; about 39 cm high

    Why it fits

Adults who build LEGO often want a model that does something once it is done, and a lever that sends barrels down the scaffolding gives this one a reason to be touched as well as looked at.

    Skip this if

They never played the original. The nostalgia is the point, and without it this is a large cabinet on a shelf.

LEGO Pokémon Venusaur, Charizard & Blastoise
    12

LEGO Pokémon Venusaur, Charizard & Blastoise

Best for: A serious adult builder who loved the first Pokémon games

    by LEGO

By far the biggest build on this page

    • Recommended for 18 and up, 6,838 pieces
    • Three posable figures: Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise
    • Beach, jungle and volcano stands that connect into one display
    • Figures about 18 to 23 cm tall

    Why it fits

At 6,838 pieces this is a long project, the kind an adult fan returns to over many sessions, and the three starters in their final forms are the set a fan of the original games will recognise at once.

    Skip this if

They have never built a large LEGO set. Start with the Eevee; a first adult build this size can stall halfway, and it needs a lot of display space when done.
