Seven Outdoor Gifts, Sorted by How Far They Travel From the Car

For someone whose weekends happen outside, from a two night campsite to a fire in the back garden. None of this is specialist climbing or mountaineering kit.

    Three quick picks

Different answers for different situations. The full list and the reasons are below.

The pick if you only buy one thing

Hydro Flask 32oz Wide Mouth Water Bottle

Used on every trip regardless of what the trip is, and the only pick here that also gets used on a Tuesday at a desk. The other two quick picks are for after dark and for the campsite itself.

The small one that gets used most

Rechargeable LED Beanie Hat with Light

Light and warmth in one object, with both hands free. It earns its place from October onward for dog walks and bin runs, not just for camping.

    For somewhere you can park

Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 Smokeless Fire Pit

The centrepiece pick, and the heaviest thing here. Choose it when the outdoors in question has a driveway or a campsite pitch rather than a trailhead.

    The car park test

Outdoor gift lists go wrong by ignoring weight. A thing that is wonderful in a back garden can be a burden two kilometres up a trail, and the same list will happily recommend both without mentioning the difference. So this guide is ordered by distance from the car. The beanie, the coffee press and the drone go in a pack without anyone noticing. The bottle and the boot kit travel fine but you feel them. The fire pit and the speaker are for somewhere you can park.

The second thing these lists skip is upkeep. Outdoor kit gets wet, muddy and scratched, which is the point of it, and the gift that keeps someone's existing boots alive is often worth more than a new gadget. That is why a cleaning kit sits in a gift guide here. It is the least exciting thing on the page and the one most likely to still be in use in three years.

We do not show prices on this page. Amazon prices move daily and we would rather send you to the live number than print one that is wrong by the time you read it. Every button goes to the product page on Amazon.ca.

    • How far from the car does it need to go? That rules more things out than budget does.
    • Does it need charging? Anything with a battery needs a plan for a weekend away.
    • Do they already own one? Water bottles and speakers are the two most duplicated outdoor gifts.
    • Is it for the trip or for the kit? Maintenance gifts last longer than gear gifts.

    All 7 picks

Hydro Flask 32oz Wide Mouth Water Bottle

    1. Every trip, and most days that are not trips

Hydro Flask 32oz Wide Mouth Water Bottle

    by Hydro Flask

    Check price on Amazon

The only pick that is useful on a day with no plan

    • 32 oz, wide mouth
    • Double wall vacuum insulation, listed as cold up to 24 hours and hot up to 12
    • Flex Cap described as leak resistant
    • Stainless steel, described as not retaining or transferring flavours

    Why it fits

Hydration is the one need that does not care which outdoor activity it is. Wide mouth matters more than it sounds: it takes ice and it can actually be cleaned, which is where narrow bottles quietly fail.

    Skip this if

They already own one. This is the single most duplicated outdoor gift there is, and a second insulated bottle is a shelf ornament. At 32 oz it is also a lot of bottle for a short walk.

Rechargeable LED Beanie Hat with Light

    2. Dog walks after dark, camp setup, jobs in a shed

Rechargeable LED Beanie Hat with Light

    by MELASA

Light and warmth in one thing, with nothing in either hand

    • Knit beanie with a built in light
    • Rechargeable
    • Covers the ears, described as lightweight to wear for longer
    • Described as hands free lighting for paths and tasks

    Why it fits

Most outdoor problems after sunset are really problems with hands. A headlamp does this too, but a headlamp is one more thing to pack, and nobody wears one to take the bin out.

    Skip this if

They want a proper headlamp with real range for night hiking. This is close work and pathfinding, not a trail at speed. It is also one knitted size, so it suits some heads better than others.

    AeroPress Original Coffee Press

    3. The first hour of a morning away from a kitchen

    AeroPress Original Coffee Press

    by AeroPress

    Check price on Amazon

Makes real coffee with no power and almost no weight

    • Uses air pressure with micro filtration
    • Described as covering French press, pour over and espresso style brewing
    • Brew time, water temperature and grind are all adjustable by the user
    • Compact, described as suited to home, office or a weekend away

    Why it fits

Camp coffee is usually a compromise and this is the pick that refuses to be one. It needs no electricity and packs down small, so the quality does not depend on where they woke up.

    Skip this if

They take instant coffee happily, or they are not going to grind beans on a trip. It also needs its own filters, so it is not quite a complete gift by itself.

GEAR AID Revivex Suede Nubuck & Fabric Boot Care Kit

    4. Someone with boots they already love

GEAR AID Revivex Suede Nubuck & Fabric Boot Care Kit

    by GEAR AID

    Check price on Amazon

The only pick that protects what they own instead of adding to it

    • For suede, nubuck and fabric footwear
    • Includes a cleaner, a brush and a scuff eraser
    • Adds a finish described as resisting water, oil and stains
    • Described as helping maintain breathability

    Why it fits

The least exciting thing on this page and probably the most useful. Good boots are expensive and die of neglect rather than mileage, so this is the gift that quietly extends something they already care about.

    Skip this if

Their boots are full grain leather, which wants a different treatment, or they buy cheap boots and replace them. Check what the boots are made of before you order.

DJI Neo – 4K Mini Drone

    6. Someone who already takes photos of every trip

DJI Neo – 4K Mini Drone

    by DJI

    Check price on Amazon

The only pick aimed at what happens after the trip

    • Listed at 135 g
    • 4K video
    • Palm takeoff and landing, described as usable without a controller
    • Subject tracking and eight QuickShot modes

    Why it fits

It is small enough to actually come along, which is the reason most drones stay home. Palm launch means it can be used on a walk without stopping to set anything up.

    Skip this if

They are heading for national or provincial parks, where drone flying is frequently restricted or banned outright. Drone rules in Canada depend on weight and on where you are flying, so have them check the current requirements for this model before the first flight rather than taking a product description's word for it.

Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 Smokeless Fire Pit

    7. A back garden, a driveway, a campsite you can drive to

Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 Smokeless Fire Pit

    by Solo

    Check price on Amazon

The one everybody sits around, and the one that never goes in a pack

    • Listed at 14 by 19.5 inches, stainless steel
    • Double wall with a 360 degree airflow design, described as greatly reducing smoke
    • Burns wood, with no fans, batteries or propane
    • Described as portable between garden, campsite and beach

    Why it fits

Smoke is the reason people give up on fire pits, and this is built around that one complaint. It is the pick that turns an evening outdoors into the event rather than the backdrop.

    Skip this if

They have no outdoor space of their own, or local fire rules make an open wood fire a problem. It is also the bulkiest thing here by a wide margin, so it wants storage and a car.
